Final Rational

My initial brief for this project was to create a space that is comfortable, relaxing and a private environment so my client can prepare herself for bed and for the next day to put her makeup on to expose herself to the public. I wanted my space to be natural and pure and inflict a calming feel when entered. I feel like I was successful in achieving this. My room is simplistic yet has an astonishing feature wall that is stunning and harmonious creating a calming feeling. I liked the idea of using onyx as a feature to bring character to a simple room and bring it to life with colour and through the movement of the material. I also researched that onyx can be lit up from behind giving it a glow like appearance, and light can also be reflected off it. I wanted to incorporate a light behind it to show this glow so that light is present in the room when it is dark and natural light will be used through the window during the day. The shapes and movements created in the onyx show resemblance of water movement or ripples. I also chose blue onyx as a water resemblance. Onyx is a completely natural resource well suited for my clients room as I wanted to display a space made out of completely raw and natural materials to resemble the idea of cleansing and purifying, the feeling you get when washing your face.
I chose to only have one piece of furniture in the room because I wanted my space to purely represent cleansing your face. I feel if anything else was in the room it would distract and take away from the idea of cleaning, purifying and washing your face. My sink is made completely of raw materials of onyx, a repetition of my feature wall, and glass, repetition of my window. I wanted to show repetition throughout my room to symbolise the idea of ritual, a reoccurring event, which is exactly what my client displays every night when washing her face. My sink looks very modern and displays only natural materials. The water flow into my sink comes form above like a waterfall shower head. The water from above will create a trickling rainfall noise creating relaxing sounds.
Lastly I have a large glass window that is textured into a pattern that reflects the shapes and moments of the onyx feature wall. This repetition continues the idea of ritual but also keeps the harmonious movements within the room. Because the window is textured, you would not be able to clearly see in or out. I chose to show this to resemble my idea of publicity and privacy. I wanted my room to be a private space where my client can feel comfortable in her own skin. I have shown the idea of publicity by allowing exposure through natural light to come into the room. This is how i have represented the idea of privacy and publicity.
Through my ideas and thoughts I feel like I have reached my brief and created a calm, relaxing room where my client can feel comfortable to cleanse and refresh her face.

Development ideas - Onyx

Idea 1:
  • blue onyx back wall to give the room a refreshing feature of colour that relates to the rippled water and harmonious movements of washing your face.
  • square onyx block in the middle of the room but has glass cut out in shape of an onyx form to give resemblance to the back wall as well as a natural feeling as you can see the water in the sink. This gives a refreshing organic feeling. I also like the idea of being able to stand in the middle of the room and look at either the feature wall or the glass window
  • white walls to emphasis and not distract from the feature wall
  • rainfall showering head to give rebalance to the nature aspect and also gives a refreshing organic feel. I also like the idea of the sound it will make which will also emphasis the organic aspect I am after
Idea 2:

  • more subtle onyx feature wall so the the patterns and colours aren't too overwhelming.
  • sink mounted on the wall to give more of a simple standard approach.
  • plain white wall so it doesn't distract from the feature wall or patterned glass

Idea 3:

  • this was a similar approach to my first idea accept I have mounted the sink to the wall to give the room more space and connect to the feature wall.
  • I have also incorporated a water flow at the top of the wall so the water falls down the wall, symbolising the running of water down a rock face.

Idea 4:

  • my forth idea is the same patterned used idea 1 and 2 as I like the beauty of the natural patterns formed within the onyx
  • I have taken inspiration from an architect of the sink. I like how it has a modern look to it but is also made out of natural materials. I like the use of repetition with the rectangular shape and onyx on the wall as well as the base of the sink.
  • as well as idea 1 I have used a rainfall showering style for the water flow.
  • In the example you can see I have also incorporated a side view to show how the glass window will look. I like the idea of patterned glass so I developed it to go with the harmony of my room. I had the idea of replicating the pattern of my onyx feature wall on the textured glass to give repetition and to show texture that flowed through the room. I also this this could look effective from the outside liking in to see the colour show through behind the glass.
  • the glass will be textured therefor will not be see through. This is to emphasis my idea of privacy/publicity. The window creates the idea of exposure from the inside through natural light and a hint of the outside world but form the outside you are unable to see through to the inside, therefore, creating the idea of privacy.

Idea 5:

  • shows how I have moved the onyx texture throughout the walls in the room. I thought this would bring more character to the room yet it also might be too overwhelming with colour and texture
  • I used the plank with the sick as a bowl sitting on it to show a modern turn on a natural sink. The sink is made if white texture stone and the platform the plain white onyx.
  • I feel like there is too much going on in this roo and takes away from the idea of simplicity I originally have.

Idea 6:

  • idea 6 shows an extremely large bowl shaped sink in the middle of the room. My idea with this was to instead of wasting just your face, but also please your whole body too. My idea was to create a cleaning room.
  • I feel like the idea is a completely different aspect of what I am aiming to show, therefore, it might take away the relevance of my initial ideas.

Material Ideas

Coloured onyx. Raw, organic, natural surface that can be lit from behind to create a glowing effect.

I love the idea of using onyx as a feature wall in my room to give the room a touch of colour that isn't artificial and looks really effective. I also like the ripple effect that is created in the onyx stone naturally. I can get the water effect I'm wanting from using a raw natural material that has a glowing feel when light is placed behind it. This gives the room a feature that relates to my theme.

Material Ideas

White onyx is a raw organic material.

I like the idea of using white onyx on my walls as it adds texture to the room rather than plain white walls that can become plain and a bit boring.

Material Ideas

Light emitting concrete is generated through using thousands of optical fibre strands that are places in the concrete to transmit light. This can be either natural or artificial.

Material Ideas

Terrazzo is a material that was used in state houses on benches, vanities etc. Terrazzo is a natural material that would suit well in my clients room. Its a pure material and relates well to the state house.
